History of Yale Hill:
At one time there were five mills on the Kampoosa Brook : a gristmill, distillery, woolen factory, chair factory, sawmill (ours) and a trip hammer shop, built between 1782 and 1822 and all within a half mile top to bottom. It is said that at times of low water in the brook, the owner of the mill served by the first dam would inform all those downstream that he planned to operate his water wheel at a given time so that they might take advantage of the extra water flow. Looking at the handsome residential houses of Yale Hill now , it's a stretch to believe it was at one time the manufacturing hub of Stockbridge. But our sawmill, commonly known as the Comstock mill, was apparently running into the 1930's according to our town plumbing inspector who used to catch a ride around the wheel as a boy. The mill itself still stands and houses some of our guests within it's old post and beam construction.
